History
At South Stanley Junior School, we aim to build a progressive history curriculum which encompasses local and world history from significant periods of time. Using a chronological approach, children will begin by looking at the early Stone Age and the first people to live in Britain. We will move on to look at early civilisations including the Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greeks moving into The Roman Empire and Roman Britain. In upper Key Stage 2, children will study Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots as well as the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for Britain. For a contrast to British history, we will look at Early Islamic civilisation. To extend knowledge of Britain’s history after 1066, we will look at wars through time as well as a local history study into mining. Throughout each unit, children will link their previous skills and knowledge so that disciplinary and substantive knowledge are retained. An enquiry approach will be employed so that children have a chance to ask their own historical questions and use a range of sources to draw their conclusions.
