Music
Pupils are taught music through a learning platform called ‘Kapow’. There are opportunities to compose, perform and listen to a wide range of music. Tuned and untuned percussion instruments are available as well as digital instruments through the use of the app ‘Garage Band’. Pupils are taught some basic notation and the main concepts and vocabulary associated with performance and composition. The platform links well with other areas of the curriculum and is rich in the range of music genres and cultures taught. Singing is also a common thread throughout this learning platform and pupils have the chance to sing a wide variety of songs from many traditions.

During their time at SSJS, pupils have the opportunity to learn a brass instrument through Durham Music Services. Pupils will also access whole class tuition from Durham Music Services and this is usually in the form of ukulele and drumming (normally taught in Y3 and Y5). Whole school singing is taught regularly and pupils have the chance to join school choir.
