Rights Respecting School Award

We would like to introduce our Rights Respecting Steering Group. UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award recognises schools that are safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

Our group will play a vital role to make sure that our school is a place where these values are embedded in everyday life. Two pupils from each class have been chosen to represent their classmates’ views and use these to inform decisions in school.

At our last steering group meeting, we decided that we want to improve our school grounds by decreasing the amount of litter. The children decided that there should be a litter pick around the school grounds every two weeks. Each class will get to have a go before the Christmas holidays. Your child will receive a letter asking them to bring in wellies if needed depending on the weather. This work is linked to:

‘Article 24 (health and health services) – Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.’

Having already achieved the bronze award, we are now on our journey to silver! You will be able to find updates on our progress, as well as information on events in and around school, on the website.

The Rights Respecting Articles are becoming a part of everyday life in South Stanley Junior School. They are referenced around the school on displays, in lessons and in every day discussions. Most PSHCE lessons now have a link with one of the articles.

Every two weeks in school we have an assembly with a focus on a different Rights Respecting Article. During the assembly the children get to think about the article and how it affects their lives and the wider world. Why not ask your child what right has been focussed on this fortnight?

‘I feel privileged to be on the school council because it gives me an opportunity to improve the school and make it a better, healthier environment.’

Alexis Year 6:

‘I enjoy being a member of the council because it’s nice to be able to use our students’ ideas to help and improve our school. Being able to help is a great part and I love how I can help. This is a great privilege.’

Kieran Year 6:

‘I like being a member of the school council because it is a privilege and I get to help people in the school.’
